It is the motorcycle ride that Oakley, Chad and I promoted on the radio. It was a motorcycle ride from Shriner's Hospital that started at 8:00 this morning and ended at noon at Sugar House Park. The ride, which is sponsored and led by the Salt Lake City Police Squad went up through all 5 lakes along the Wasatch. After the ride, we were treated to a lunch from Rib City of pulled pork sandwiches, slaw and beans. It was delish! All of the proceeds are going to Shriner's. Arrow 103.5 also gave away a Big Boy Harley and an F-150 this year.
This picture of Oakley is going to be posted on the Harley Davidson web site as well as the Arrow 103.5 and FM 100 sites. They gave her this really cool leather jacket for the photos. She was hot, but told me this is what she wants instead of a car when she grows up. She is definitely my daughter!!! I will admit I had to wipe the drool from my chin a few times. I really want a bike!
We talked again with the "crew" from 103.5 and they kept referring to Oakley as the "Ambassador for Shriner's". She got her pics taken with a couple police officers and D.J.'s and we were told several times that it was nice for the riders to see an example of where their money is going and who it will help. There were over 100 bikes and Oak picked her favs to have her photo by.
Once again, it was an awesome experience provided to us by Shriner's. We had a great time!

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-29788541661126015452009-08-03T07:58:00.001-07:002009-08-03T08:22:36.475-07:00Yellow Belt Test This past Friday night, Oakley and I had our testing
for our yellow belts. It was a great night and we
both made it through. In our last belt test, we had to break a board with a side kick and this time we had to do an ax kick. Oakley was nervous she wouldn't be able to break one due to her recent surgery, but she had no problems! As always I was left in amazement of her.
It was extra fun this time because we had Dustin and Kylie with us as well as my mom and dad (who was nice enough to take our pictures) as well as my mother-in-law and Nana. We always have so much family support! So, needless to say, Although the Jo Bros have their practiced, professional smiles on, Oak and I were not as prepared for the moment so I look like I am on speed and Oak was still flirting with the cute guy who was taking the picture. It was still really fun for her to do and something she will never forget.
We were able to view all the other pictures that were taken that night as well and even though there were other little girls, Oakley was the only one Kevin crouched down next to. He also gave her a hug while he shook everyone elses hands. It makes her feel pretty darn special. I happen to think she is just that!!!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-83504410339621151272009-07-07T13:49:00.000-07:002009-07-07T14:21:05.765-07:00Stadium Of Fire Last week, we got a phone call from Mike Babcock at Shriner's asking if we were planning to be in town over the 4th and if we would like some tickets to see the Jonas Brothers at the Stadium of Fire. We originally were planning to be gone camping, but this changed things.
A very nice lady had bought 6 tickets and donated them to Shriners and told Mike to pick one patient to give them to. Mike, being the great man that he is, thought of Oakley. We were given 6 tickets to go enjoy the show. I told Oakley and she said, "Well, I dont really like them that much, but I guess since the tickets are free we can go." I had to laugh.
A few days later, I got a call from the Jonas Brothers production manager asking if Oakley and I would like tickets to meet the Jonas Brothers. For someone who "doesn't really like them" Oakley screemed so loud!!! They could only offer us 2 wristbands and one of the people had to be an adult. Kylie was bummed, but she got over it.
We started out the evening with dinner at Brick Oven and then headed over to LaVelle Edwards Stadium for the big meet 'n greet. We had spent $50 on shirts and took Oakley's prosthetic for them to sign only to get there and have them say that we couldnt take any pictures of our own and that we could not ask for autographs. They had a photographer there who took our picture with the Jo Bro's and that we can "purchase at a later time if we choose to". It was a little disappointing, but Oakley is still on cloud 9! The Jo Bro's were shaking everyones hands as they went up to get the pictures taken, but they all hugged Oakley. We were only blessed to be in their presence for about 10 minutes total, but it was a great experience for Oakley.
After the photo op, we went to meet Chad and Kylie and find our seats. The person who donated the tickets had paid $120 a piece for the seats and we were right on the field with a perfect view of the stage. We were also seated right behind all the service men and women and the kids got a kick out of seeing all of them in uniform.
The 388th fighter wing from Hill AFB did a fly over and the audience sang the National Anthem as it was broadcast to military bases throughout the world. It was very emotional!
SheDaisy was the opening act and they did a great job! Glenn Beck was the "host" and he was very emotional through out. He also did a good job. Then the Jonas Brothers came on and all you could hear for a while was screeming! Like Oakley, I am not a big fan, but they put on a good show and we all had a great time. Oakley is now a pretty big fan. They also retired a huge flag at the end of the night by burning it. It was really cool for the kids to take part in that.
We are very appreciative of the people who donated these tickets and that we were chosen to use them. Oakley has had a rough recovery from her surgery a couple weeks ago, but since we were given these tickets, she has kept telling me how special she feels that of all the patients at the hospital that she was the one who was picked.
Thanks again Mike.... It was a night our family will never forget!!!

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-42951017125657990762009-06-18T09:08:00.000-07:002009-06-18T09:20:41.236-07:00Oakley's Surgery
These flowers are from the Gann Family. A lot of you have asked how this all started so let me share the story...
She has had 5 surgeries in her short life: Her amputation at Shriners Hospital was done when she was 10 months old. We were told to plan to be in the hospital for 5 days and we were only there 2. Since she was in a body cast, they told us to expect her to do nothing but lay on the floor for 6 weeks and 20 minutes after we got home she was dragging herself across the floor in an attempt to get to her toys. She got her first prosthetic 2 weeks before her 1st birthday and we put it on and she took off walking. Never had to have physical therapy. Astonishing!
Two years ago, in a 2 weeks period of time, we found out she has a blood disease called Von Willebrand. It is like hemophelia, but not as severe. She is missing a clotting factor in her blood which we were told would only be a problem if she needed surgery or got hurt. She gets nose bleeds that last upwards of an hour and bleeds a lot when she looses a tooth and she bruises very easily. 2 days after that diagnosis we ended up at Primary Childrens for a belly CT to see if she had kidney stones due to constant symptoms of a UA with negative results. About 30 minutes after we got home from the hospital, they called us and told us to get her back up there ASAP because the CT showed her appendix was ready to burst. She was already on the surgery schedule for the following week to have her nose cauterized to stop the nose bleeds so they did the appendectomy and the nose thing at the same time. Then 2 weeks later, still having UA symptoms, she had exploritory bladder surgery. That was a very long month!!!
This surgery yesterday is to help her leg grow straighter. Her left leg is 40% shorter than her right leg and is growing at an angle they call Valgus. She had an infinity plate screwed into the inside of her left knee so it can stunt the growth of that growth plate and allow the outside of the knee to catch up. The surgery was only a little over an hour and she will only have a scar about 1 1/5" long. In 12-14 months, she will have to have it removed. Since she is still growing, there is a good chance she may have to have this done a couple more times, but it is a wait and see.
She had to fast since 8pm the night before and they didn't take her into surgery until 1:45pm so she was starving! She didn't complain too much tho. They gave her Versaid (sp?) to help calm her before she went in and it made her so loopy!! They handed her a sticker of Donkey from Shrek and she looked at it and asked if it was a picture of her and laughed so hard she started to cry. She kept saying she felt "random" and "awkward". Chad and I laughed quite hard ourselves!
She came back from surgery a little over an hour later in a bit of pain, but after about 30 minutes it faded and she hasn't anything but Tylenol since. She will need to be fitted for a new leg in a couple months and she has chosen skulls and cross bones for the design. She is such a trooper! She is constantly amazing us with her strength. We say this all the time, but yesterday in the midst of her pain, she said "I know it could be worse." Every time we have had to be in the hospital we witness how truly blessed we are! We love her so much and are so grateful for all the family and friends who continue to support and help us when we need it.
Shriners Hospital has been one of the biggest blessings in our lives. They do everything for free. All the surgeries, prosthetics (which aren't cheap) and therapy are possible because of contributions of generous people. They have never charged us a penny and will continue to provide this care until Oakley is 18. I would selfishly implore you with every fiber of my being, if you are going to donate $, time, service, etc, Shriners is the place to do it.
Thanks again to everyone for all the prayers, phone calls, visits, flowers, gifts, and well wishes for Oakley as well as the rest of us. We wouldn't be able to deal with all of this without you!!!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-64147543532282910592009-06-02T10:41:00.000-07:002009-06-02T11:02:07.746-07:00Belt TestingSo, Oakley and I had our first belt test in Taekwando last Friday and it was awesome! We are now advanced white belts. There were a lot of people testing so it was mostly a group effort. We did our blocks, kicks and forms and then a bit of self defense and sparring with a partner. Near the end of the test we all had to break a board with a side kick. All the kids in the class broke 1/2 inch boards, but I had to break a 3/4 inch one. One of the key things in Taekwando is confidence. (If I didnt have any of that, I wouldn't be taking a class with all kids!) Honestly, when Mr. McPharlin put the board in front of me, I told him he gave me the wrong one, that it was too big. He laughed and walked away. I watched all the kids, including Oakley, break their boards without a problem, so when it came my turn I took that confidence and focus and Ki ap'ed for all I was worth and did it. It is amazing what a little faith in yourself can do!!!
I have loved being able to take this class with Oakley and share this with her. She is an amazing thing to watch. If ever I think I can't do something, I look at her and see what she has accomplished and I don't have any more excusses. It can take up to 3 years to get a black belt and that is our goal. We will keep you posted on our progress!!!

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-47246327614089197852009-05-05T17:06:00.000-07:002009-05-17T17:08:21.796-07:00One Day We Will Look Back On This And Laugh....But, I am not laughing yet! We got back from our cruise to the Eastern Caribbean over 3 weeks ago and it took a while to start to feel normal again. It was quite the adventure! Said adventure started about 10 minutes after my dad dropped Chad, Bryan and Julie and I off at the airport.
We were to fly to Dallas at noon and then onto Fort Lauderdale. Due to severe weather in Dallas, our flight was delayed at first for 30 minutes. While sitting waiting to board the plane, I went to use my iPod, which was working fine when we left the house, only to find it totally broken. It wouldn't even turn on! "Oh, well" I thought. No biggie. I can go a week without tunes. HA!
Meanwhile, Elder Richard G. Scott was waiting to fly to Dallas as well so we got a photo with him. He was very kind and didn't seem the least bit annoyed with all of us who asked for pictures. I told Chad that nothing else could go wrong in the presence of a General Authority. Boy, was I wrong!
Finally around 1:00 they started to board the plane. 10 minutes later the pilot came over the speaker and announced that our flight had been delayed yet again and that our new departure time would be 2:30, but they were not going to let anyone off the plane because that could change at any time. So, we sat on the plane for 1 1/2 hours and finally took off. Since our flight out was delayed, they kept assuring us that any connecting flights would be pushed back as well. When we finally landed in Dallas the pilot, who I didn't really care for at this point, told us that we needed to wait 15-20 minutes for a gate. So, while sitting there on the tarmack, we watched the flight we were supposed to be on for Fort Lauderdale take off.
By now it was almost 5:00 and so we rushed to the nearest gate to see if we could get on the next flight that was supposed to leave at 8:45. The lady asked me for my last name and then for our boarding passes. While I handed them to her, Chad said, "Chad and Kristin Doyle" She told us we were already confirmed on the next flight, but that Bryan and Julie were not. She printed us new boarding passes and we left to see if we could find something for our friends. This flight kept getting pushed back and around 9:00 they said it wouldnt leave until midnight. Bryan worked his magic and got he and Julie on the flight so we all settled in to wait.
Around 10:45 that night, there was a bomb scare. About 30 feet from where we were sitting, someone had left their bag and they brought in a bomb sniffing dog. Quite entertaining!
I have always thought I had good intuition, and at about 10 minutes to midnight, I got that niggling feeling that I needed to check our boarding passes. I checked our seats and then looked at our names so I could hand Chad's to him and noticed the last name said Doyle, but the first names were James and Evelyn. I was in shock! I started to panic and decided to go to the nearest gate to have them print the correct passes only to be told that the real Evelyn and James were already checked in. UGH!
After waiting for 30 minutes to see if we could get on stand-by, we were booked on a flight to Miami the next morning at 6:00am. Even tho it was the airlines fault that we had sat in the airport for 7 hours holding the wrong boarding passes, they did nothing to help us. They were offering other passengers left and right a $300 travel voucher, a night in a hotel and a flight to Fort Lauderdale the next morning, but did nothing for us. Chad and I ended up staying over night in the airport, boarding the flight to Miami the next morning, sharing a cab with another couple at a total cost of $140 and making it to the hotel that we paid for and never got to see just in time to board a shuttle to take us to the boat. After not sleeping for 36 hours and not eating since 6pm the night before, we were beat and praying that the rest of the trip would go off without a hitch.
Long story short, (too late) the cruise was awesome! The whole trip it was really windy and that made for me getting sick on day 5, but other than that it was really fun. We got to spend time with our great friends, Bryan and Julie Jensen as well as Bryan's parents, Clyde and Connie, his brother Clint and sister-in-law Corrie and Corrie's parents, Marv and Barb.
The MSC is an Italian cruise line so we had a lot of authentic Italian food, which by day 5 I was pretty sick of. I was feeling so nauseous having to smell that food that all I ate from Wednesday night until we got off the boat on Saturday was hard rolls. I lost 3 pounds.... not many people can say that after a cruise! ;)
The ship itself was gorgeous! The places we stopped were the Dominican Republic (my very favorite) where we got to snorkel and hang out on the beach, St. Maarten, where we rented aqua boats and went to snorkel in ship wreck bay, Antigua where we got to zip line through the rain forest and Bahama's where we got to shop and relax. Chad enjoyed taking pictures of all the fire hydrants we could find. (He is easy to entertain!)
It was quite an adventure, but I was really glad to get home! I missed my kids terribly and am so grateful to all the family who helped take such good care of them so we could go! We knew they were in good hands, which helped us be able to relax and have fun!
ENJOY THE PICS!

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-88981987941170535022009-04-16T07:15:00.000-07:002009-04-16T07:22:27.690-07:00The Time Has Come The time has finally come to get packed and head out on our cruise to the Eastern Caribbean!!! I can't believe it has been 6 months since we booked this trip. The time has flown! Tomorrow morning, Chad and I, along with our good friends, Bryan and Julie Jensen, will head to Fort Lauderdale (just in time for spring break!) and after spending the night there, will board the MSC Orchestra cruise ship. We will stop in the Dominican Republic and attempt to visit Playa Rincon, one the top 10 beaches in the world, (photo above) for some world class snorkeling. Then it is on to Antigua for the zip line through the rain forrest as well as the Leap Of Faith, then to St. Marteen and the Bahama's. We will of course post lots of pics when we get back home on the 26th.
We are so very grateful to all of our family who is helping us with our kids so we can take this once in a lifetime trip!! We love you all and will see you when we get back!!!!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-65475478294744347802009-04-09T12:24:00.000-07:002009-04-09T12:42:43.435-07:00TAEKWANDO BABY!
So, Oakley and I have started a new adventure together. We are now taking Taekwando and it is sooo much fun! We go twice a week and have been doing it for about 6 weeks now. We are both white belts but will get to test for our advanced white belts in June. I have always wanted to get into marshal arts and I am kicking myself that I waited so long to start.
We take over at Black Diamond Taekwando in Herriman and we have a great master. While we are learning all our blocks, kicks and punches, we have gotten to break boards and spar a little here and there and may I say how satisfying it is to be able to kick the crap out of someone in the name of fun!!!
As always, Oakley is fearless! She does amazingly well. She has a few problems with all the pivoting we have to do, but we are 2 of 3 girls in our class and she is better than most of the boys in the class. Just one more thing to make me more than proud to be her mom!!!
As we continue to test and move up in rank we will keep posting. It can take up to 3+ years to get a black belt, but that is a goal that both Oak and I have so cheer for us and come along for the ride!!!!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-87371035744735507212009-02-22T12:15:00.000-08:002009-02-22T12:28:09.220-08:00TAGGED AGAIN!I have been tagged yet again by both Tammy and Sonya so here goes another....
Here is how it works.
First - post the rules on your blog,
Second - answer the six questions about yourself
Third - let each person you tag know by leaving a comment on their blog.
So here goes.....
1. It has started with some changes in things for our family as I have gone back to work. I will only be working 2 days a week, but it will be all day. I am working as a scheduler for Alta View Internal Medicine. I schedule additional tests for patients, such as MRI's, X-Rays, ultra sounds, appointments with other doctors, etc. I have been there a couple weeks now and it is hard! Lots to learn and trying to read the Docs handwriting? Forget it! I am learning and getting more and more comfortable with it as I work more, but the adjustment is still a work in progress. I love the adult conversation and time away from laundry and the other "house wife" duties. I think it will be something I do for a long time.
Dustin recently was awarded his Arrow Of Light for cub scouts and was bridged into boy scouts the same night. He is excited to start doing things with the "big boys".
Oakley is starting to take piano again and determined to stick with it. She faithfully practices and looks forward to when Grandma Doyle comes to teach her.
Kylie just keeps growing and getting smarter and smarter. She loves school! She comes home every day and immediately does her homework and then goes in the front room and plays school for a couple hours. I love having a child that excited about learing!
Chad is getting ready to start a fire officer class this month so he is busy studying and preparing his presentation on SCBA masks. How exciting! I am so proud to be his wife. He works so hard for us and continues to look for opportunities to be promoted. He was made an Engineer last year and is working toward testing for Captain in the next few years. He is such a good husband and father! I am so blessed to be married to him!
So, that is the current update on our family. Hope you all have a great new year as well!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-86920884660222324222009-01-04T17:35:00.000-08:002009-01-04T17:47:52.373-08:00Happy New Year!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 230px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi86Qn5ImMOr4HzWuyy6pOcuKRQ8qfk_eKtySpNFoUfV6Lw1OD3QGloE_5V6CW5cHOWPtVpQMkCwH8oladoogDdCKVqLcCfqzcIH3wzqO-Oqlu7-6mBjVCHLaI9OXZa24gHQrgoRHHOL2Y/s320/doyle+fam.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287620333523232498" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 239px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE34qsloyb03AzVyU3e8z8BdFZ2bdj0i7MCL-q-gBTjKBPeOlzSZTBL3VEXqSGxZjSFz8IhT-_SzchFPgt1ReRQuYVmDNA9aVuLwbJTLSyo2Pxs-K3EbW0FcJVV2bEfnvO6lP3Ojn2Qtk/s320/chadkris.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287620326437095330" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxjReDS7A6oaJ8oTiFgtDmCIwJJtFZNubKeDIRhALrNPidBWsxFSEiy11S3NrNYPPEqcvevOfXsOLqjh6AMCMi0fOn3MHwF9UIKN3wJfPcJj34Wa9Dp5UlSUm1eBxp49i_enITP8OoTyw/s320/hansen+girls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287620326098075890" />
This Christmas was great! We had many a good family party and were spoiled by Santa and family (as always). Chad had to work on Christmas Eve and that is always hard for me and the kids, but we had him home on the big day and we loved it. The kids got a Wii (finally) and much needed clothes. (They never stop growing!)Chad and I got a new water heater, WAHOO!!!, as well as passports and a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean in April. We are very blessed to have all the fun things we have.
New Years Eve found Chad at work again so the kids and I went to my parents house and had one heck of a party with Ma and Pa, Aunt Julie, Aunt Megan, Uncle Adam and Ellie. We ate Cafe Rio and made ourselves absolutely sick laughing while playing games. My parents are such good sports when us kids enjoy their "senior moments". We laughed until we cried and Megan started to snort so we called it a night.
I am excited for the New Year and hope it is a good one!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-45922237122658284572008-12-03T09:39:00.001-08:002008-12-03T09:56:17.228-08:00Thanksgiving Thanksgiving this year was one of the best ever! They also know that he is very prone to head injuries. Well, Friday, I got a call from the school nurse telling me Dustin had been playing football at recess and got hurt. Now anytime my kids need to check out, they are the ones who call me so when it was the nurse who called, I knew something was very wrong.
Turns out that after a play, Dustin was running back to position and another player stuck his foot out just as Dustin turned and he went down so hard he ended up with a mild concussion. When I went to pick him up, he was very shaky, he was nauseous, dizzy, and his pupils were dilated. He had quite a goose-egg on his head as well. I brought him home and had him lay down while I freaked out not knowing what to do. Of course Chad was working and I couldn't get a hold of him, so I called the pediatrician. They told me unless he was throwing up or couldn't stay awake, then there was no need to take him in. He just needed to lay low all weekend and would slowly get better.
Needless to say, there will be no more football playing for a long while. Here we are 3 days later and he still gets dizzy when he stands up. This kid is so smart and such a good football player! It makes me sad that he got hurt, but I am glad he will be ok and that it wasnt any worse!!!! I Love you Dustin!
Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-7765835204624278502008-11-05T15:25:00.000-08:002008-11-05T15:57:53.458-08:00Good Bye to a Friend
Yesterday, my little friend Trent DuVal passed away. He and his family have been so amazing through this trial and have set an awesome example for so many. Trent was a great little kid who always had energy to spare. I have known this family for 9 years and they are some of the nicest, most amazing people in the world. If you read Trents blog, you can see the influence he had on people. There are a ton of comments about he inspired people and I am lucky to be counted among them. He mostly taught me that no matter what we have to deal with, little trials or big, Heavenly Father loves each of us and knows what we are going through. We may not always like the answer He gives us, but that is the test of our faith and we become closer to Him this way.
Thank you Trent for never giving up and reminding me to look for the good things. I chose not to this year because I get so hot when I run and I was sick. My sisters, however, couldn't pass up the opportunity.
My sisters are "special". Sometimes I think they each need a helmet and a ride on the short bus, but that is a story for another time. We have so much fun when we get together!!! There were a ton of really cool costumes. The race is even more spooky because you run through the American Fork Cemetery twice. We got a really cool long sleeve race shirt that says "Runnin' through the bone yard", a goody bag at the finish line, a glo stick necklace, and a ticket. At the finish line you take your ticket up to a table and if you find a match you win that item. I literally win something at every race I run and this time was no exception. I won a very cool water bottle to add to my collection. It was a great race and one I will definitely run every year!

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-6822892367165312252008-10-11T10:43:00.000-07:002008-10-11T10:53:56.734-07:00OAKLEY'S NEW LEG
So, a couple weeks ago, Oakley finally got her new leg. She picked the pink and brown paisley for this one. (We talked her out of the black and white zebra stripes!) As always, the fitting is trial and error and after 4 trips to Shriner's we got to bring it home. However, after wearing it for a few hours, it really started to hurt her. As you can see in this photo of just her leg, her knee is growing rather quickly on the inside and not so much on the outside. She is scheduled to have surgery next June to have a plate put in to stunt the growth of the inside of the knee and let the outside catch up.
We got in to see the prosthetist and got the rubbing fixed. She loves this leg because they put a new foot on it and it also has a hingable ankle. Very technologically advanced!
We are so proud of her and how well she deals with all she has been dealt.
We love you Oakley!!!
Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-84128230215225664212008-09-30T09:19:00.001-07:002008-09-30T11:36:14.542-07:00Kristin's Elk HuntBeautiful Scenery!

Kristin's 5 point!!!
Chad and Kristin
The Elk Posse!!!!
We had a bittersweet elk hunt this past week. Dustin started having some serious medical problems a few days before we left and ended up having to be taken to the hospital several times for blood tests. They were testing for everything from Von Willebrand, (the blood disease Oakley has) to Leukemia. Since there were several days in between the tests and the results, the nurse assured us we would be ok to leave for a few days.
Guilt riden, we left Tuesday afternoon and as soon as we got to camp, Chad and I hiked down to Skull Crack (a really good elk blind) and immediately started hearing the big boys screaming at each other. It was so cool to hear that! We knew they were in there and we just had to wait until morning to go after them.
Wednesday started at 5:30 am and we got on the bulls right away. We literally ran after some of them, but that day and night we just couldn't get a clear shot. I saw the biggest elk I have ever seen Wednesday night and he was about 60 yards away. The problem was he was on private property so we had to watch him walk away. The first day we easily hiked over 20 miles. It was exhausting, but hearing those ornery elk kept us going.
Thursday morning started bright and early again. Myself, Chad, his dad, Wade, brother Cory and our friend Roger headed out ready to get this done. Knowing we may have to head home that afternoon to be with Dustin, we felt the pressure to make this morning count. Again, right off we heard some big elk so we headed that way. Before the sun even came up we came upon a big herd bull, but it was too dark and far to shoot so as we let him head into the trees to bed down, we started after another bull in the distance.
Long story short, (too late), after calling back and forth with this 5 point, we heard him get real excited about thinking some cows were down in the river. We heard him barreling down the mountain toward us so we jumped a river and immediately got ready to shot. He came out of the trees about 23 steps away (Wade counted!) and I pulled the trigger. NOTHING HAPPENED! The primer didn't fire so I tried again and this time hit him and he went down. After I stopped shaking we went to find him and there he was 100 yards away.
He isnt the biggest elk we saw nor was he the biggest we could have killed, but for my 1st elk, I am not disappointed in the least. He is a real good 5 point who had a huge body. I can't wait to taste him!
I was so grateful for all the help I had on this hunt. I was nervous that I would disappoint Chad and that all those other hunters who would have loved to have this tag would be mad at me too, but I am pretty darn proud of myself and glad I had this opportunity. There is nothing compared to hearing those elk scream at each other and then to see them in their glory. I had a great time and was glad to be able to share that with Chad.
As for Dustin, he is doing a bit better. Whatever this is started manifesting by making him very tired, feverish and he had weird bruising all over his body. The Doc told us it could be anything from a virus to Leukemia. So far the test for the VW blood disease has come back negative. His white blood cell count is low so he is not out of the woods. We will be taking him again tomorrow (wednesday) for another blood test and we will see where he is. If his count is not up, he may have to be hospitalized for more testing and possibly a transfusion. We are keeping our fingers crossed for him and hope it is just a weird virus. We will update again when we know something.
Thanks to all our family who helped us with the kids so we could go on this hunt. I am glad I got to spend this time with Chad doing what he lives for. I love him so much and am grateful we got to do this together!Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-46536425999554898692008-09-16T11:31:00.001-07:002008-09-16T11:36:48.505-07:00Engineer Ceremony

Yesterday, Chad was promoted to Engineer in a ceremony in Salt Lake City. I am not so sure, but she knows quite a bit. Hopefully the rest of the school year will go as smooth as the first week.....
On Saturday, the 6th, my sisters, Julie and Megan and I as well as a couple of my friends (Michelle and Barbara) ran the 9/11 race for America. It is a race that I have run for the past 4 years as all the money donated goes to the families of fallen firefighters and police officers. It is a great course at Wheeler Farm and I did really well this year (if I do have to say so myself!!!) I ran the fasted 5k I have ever run, finishing in 26 minutes and 27 seconds. I finished 2nd in my age group... and, yes, there were more than 2 people in that group!! :) It sounds better to say that I finished 18th overall with more than 250 people registered for the race. I had a great time and loved being able to spend that time with my sisters. I just read Megan's blog and have to agree with her that us 3 girls think we are pretty darn funny and when we get together it all hits the fan. I love my sisters so much and to echo Meg, they are the best friends a girl could have!
We also just learned that Chad will finally be promoted to Engineer on the 15th of this month. They will hold the ceremony at Station 1 that morning so he will finally officially get his raise!
The only other major "happening" is I am preparing to go on my elk hunt in the next couple weeks. Chad has patiently taken me to shoot the muzzle loader several times and helped me get comfortable with it. I just hope I don't disappoint him and not get one! He told me I "need to show my swagger" and get a little cocky, so any words on encouragement from any of you would be great!!!! The Doyle family has had a lot of success so far in the hunts this year. My father in law, Wade, as well as Chad's sister, Tenille, both shot REALLY nice bucks on their archery hunt earlier in August and Cory, Chad's brother, as well as Kevin, our brother in law, both filled their elk tags. So here's hoping I don't mess up the streak. Stay tuned........

Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-72210872238082516192008-08-07T08:03:00.000-07:002008-08-07T08:08:59.610-07:00Thank you all so very much for all your phone calls and emails to wish Chad luck on his Engineer tests. All the extra prayers and his hard work paid off. We found out yesterday that he finished #1 in the class! Not only is he in the top spot, but he beat everyone else by 4 points! He will officially be promoted on August 25th at a ceremony in Salt Lake. We are very proud of him and we just pray he doesn't wreck one of the fire trucks!!!!
Way to go Chad!!!!!
Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-67633419249153140772008-08-01T18:21:00.000-07:002008-08-01T18:28:47.788-07:00Well, it has been a very stressful month at the Doyle house. Chad has been going through Engineer school and we can finally see the end in site! He has been taking major tests everyday this week and will take his State certification test on Monday. He will then interview with the board and then, with luck, will be promoted the end of August. We are all very proud of him and grateful for how hard he works for us. He never complains about working extra shifts and spends all his extra time studying so he can get this promotion. He is such a good husband and dad... we are very lucky to have him!
Oakley went to Shriners on Monday to have a clinic appointment with her surgeon. The valgus in her knee is getting worse so she is scheduled, for now, to have a plate put in her knee next June. They have decided to do the surgery during the summer as she will not be able to wear her leg for at least 2 weeks and will need to be on crutches, so they dont want her to have to be in school and deal with that. We are hoping it doesnt get worse any faster, but for now that is the plan. We will go back to Shriners on Monday when she will be casted for her new leg. She has chosen a really cute pink and brown paisley material for this new one. We will post pictures as soon as it is ready.
That is all that is new in our fam right now. Again, I will keep trying to update every now and again, but I make no promises!
Love you all!!!
Chad and Kristinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18064103197143971054noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1230895921645218031.post-35869209325477649652008-07-10T19:11:00.000-07:002008-07-10T19:13:32.676-07:00The Doyle FamilyHello All!
So, we are new to the whole blogging thing, but think it is a great way to keep everyone updated on our incredibly exciting lives.
